 the method that john came up with in
https://lists.debian.org/debian-riscv/2018/10/msg00021.html also
requires additional manual intervention: manual copying of
qemu-riscv64-system into the chroot's usr/bin before running the 2nd
stage.

 so neither method is completely straightforward.
