Uh... that's just not true.  GPL stuff can be mixed with anything 
GPL-compatible (including common BSD licenses) as long as the result is 
distributed preserving the required freedoms.  The whole is not required to 
be under the GPL (only required to be distributed with freedom) and 
distributions of compenent parts without the GPL'd part are unaffected 
(since the GPL only activates on distribution).
