The confusion this similar naming (they have nothing else in common) has
caused, has been, and still is endless.
can somebody in the know please remind us what the issues are
regarding Java(script) for RiscOS? i thought it was that licence fees
are prohibitive when spread over such a small userbase -- wasn't that
what Acorn used to say? -- but i might misremember.
I do believe you are thinking of Java which Acorn licenced from Sun.
These days some, if not all, is open source.

This is mobile version of Java which might be suitable, but will require
developer time (a very scarce resource) to configure etc.

good ol' Fresco had Ecmascript, didn't it?
i used to think it was some generic-type version of Javascript, but
you're saying that the name has changed and it's the same?
(of course Fresco is 9 years old: in fact, in checking the datestamp
just now, i see its 9th birthday is next wednesday. and its info
panel says "SSL: full. Javascript: yes".)

I think Dave Lawton was pointing out that Fresco's claim to implement
Javascript was somewhat economical with the truth, and that it was not
alone among browsers in this respect.
If you Google "ECMAScript" you will see that it was an attempt to
provide a standard, to mitigate the usual boring browser-war
confusion where everybody interpreted the terms "JavaScript",
"JScript"
etc to mean whatever they had happened to have implemented on their own
browser.

This statement invites the question "What do you mean by Javascript?".
I could find no answer to this either from the Fresco documentation
or from requests for information from ANT.
In stark contrast to this, the NetSurf team are to be congratulated
for making plain the standards towards which they are working and their
progress in achieving them. This is where OSS culture scores over commercial;
there is no incentive to hide sloppiness about specification.

like the way NetScape renders web pages and am massively thankful fo
r the time and effort everybody is putting ino it. It's
presentation is miles better than WebsterXL 1.99; but I use each. Why?
because XL has javascript. Now if this feature isn't recognised as the
dogs tonsils by some, in the light of their superior knowledge, I bow.
But as I do, I am confused.
Enlightenment, please.
