Twice in the last week or so I have downloaded zipped
archives from MW Software, using r10638.
In both cases I did not get an archive icon to drag to a
filer window, but the NetSurf window filled up with the
data.
I then had to save the page and re filetype it as 'archive'.
This never used to happen before, but I do seem to remember
reports of something similar with Fresco in the distant
past.
Given the general high competence level of the website
owner, I cannot imagine that he has done anything wrong.
However, downloading PDFs from my own websites does proceed
normally.
Ideas?

I think the issue is with MIME type settings on the server, which is
unlikely to be something under Martin's control.

I agree. This happens quite a lot with some sites. Some
streetmap.co.uk pages get displayed as plain text instead of html.
Would that not mean that the same would happen on other
browsers? Though I do recall, when downloading images (TIFF
and JPEG) from the German Tourist Authority's website that
they give different instructions for downloading the
pictures for different browsers.
Windows and MacOS browsers normally use the filename extension to
determine the filetype so will generally not exhibit this problem.
Make sure that you have entries for the relevant file types in your
mimemap file (Configure > Network > MimeMap to make sure you get the
right copy).

As originally stated, I used r10638. From the 'Hard drive
continuous access' thread, it appears that you introduced
this feature between 10640 and 10651.
Alternatively, perhaps Martin can set up an empty zip

As originally stated, I used r10638. From the 'Hard drive
continuous access' thread, it appears that you introduced
this feature between 10640 and 10651.
FWIW, it doesn't happen here with release 10649 and RISC OS 5.16. From
the little I understand these things:
1) 10650 mentions "noisy logging"; is this the cause of the
disc activity?
2) The releases after 10651 don't look as if they're relevant
to RISC OS.
As I want to be kind to my hard drive, I haven't dared go beyond
10649. Sorry, developers!

In a way, yes. But much less than you might imagine. And it's either
writing out the log files, or not having the bug fixed. Choose one :)

The drive will basically always be spinning, regardless of access.
Basically, if you're concerned about a small amount of logging, you
need to buy a better drive, or lobby your OS vendor of choice to
implement some more aggressive file system buffering.

Which, when double clicked takes a copy of the NS logfile, Saves it in my
Temp directory of the day under the name NSLog.

downloaded (again) Easiwriter 8.82.
Once the hard disc stopped whirring (quite some time) I quit
NetSurf and hopefully have a log that covers just this one
task, apart fro loading www.xe.com on startup (for which
NetSurf is configured).
In the log I replaced the log-in user name with ------.
Using simple search on the logfile I could not find any
reference to the password.
Hopefully this log is what you want. It is almost 4Mb.

For future reference, please be aware that people have day jobs, and are
thus not necessarily in a position to reply to emails immediately. It's
also possible that people also have social lives outside of NetSurf,
which means they are unable to reply immediately.
In my case, I'm currently moving house, and do not appreciate people
demanding a response (as your topic change indicates), when I'm
otherwise engaged in doing things that place far greater constraints on
my time.

have a working hypothesis as to what is causing the behaviour in
question. I can provide no timescale for a fix, however.

This has been said before, but...
Log files invariably compress well, as they contain a fair bit of repetitive
text. In this case, I suspect that your 4MB would have converted to
something less than 100KB if you ran it through zip and to less than 50KB
using bzip2 (in fact I know it would, as I've just tried it on probably
almost the same log file).
If compressing on RISC OS, use *only* zip or bzip2 -- many of the developers
(including at least one who works on the RISC OS front-end) are using Linux
and so won't be able to open SparkFS or ArcFS archives, PackDir files or any
other RISC OS-centric formats easily.

Now I'm confused, so nothing unusual there :-( In what circumstances
do you want a log file from a post-r10650 release? Unproblematic
browsing? An outright crash? (If so, pointers to known problem sites
would be helpful). Failure to load a page, as on some BBC Pages? (I
can do this latter one easily). And is the address of John-Mark's
message a good one to send the log file to?

Out of interest I took a look at the password protected Artworks area on
the MW site and can confirm that, there too, the download data fills the
browser page with data. However... on the area of the site where there
are free software downloads a normal "Netsurf Download" box with a
draggable icon appears.
By way of comparison Firefox on Win7 treats both downloads the same
offering a 'save' or 'open' option and not filling the browser window
with data.
