NetSurf progress
by Dave Higton
Last weekend there was a small "hack weekend" meeting of some
NetSurf developers in Manchester. I thought it might be
encouraging to spread some information.
If you have been downloading Continuous Integration (CI) builds,
you will probably have noticed that there have been over 25 of
them in the last few days. This represents the progress that
NetSurf has been making, both in adding new functionality and
in fixing bugs.
One bug that has been reported multiple times is that NS seems
to loop for ever when Javascript is enabled. It actually
didn't loop for ever - it just took longer than most people were
prepared to wait. The culprit was a regular expression
evaluator - not where most of us would expect lots of time to
be spent. Recent versions have shown an enormous speed up in
that particular part, which translates to a large speed up in
page loads as a whole.
Some bugs that caused crashes when Javascript was enabled, have
been fixed.
The main thrust of the work at the moment is in adding Javascript
functionality using the Duktape library. When all the Javascript
features that were there with the previous library have been
replicated, NetSurf version 3.4 will be released. This will also
add new Javascript functionality.
Many other bug reports concern the layout. NetSurf's layout
engine needs to be rewritten. This work will start some time
after release of 3.4 - though how long after is not yet known.
I would urge you to download CI builds of NetSurf and try them.
Always keep a known good version that you can go back to in the
unlikely event that a new CI build fails.
And, most of all, keep the bug reports coming in! We looked at
many of them over the weekend, and were able to close quite a
lot, in most cases because more recent versions work and do not
exhibit the reported problems.
NetSurf is fully capable of creating bug reports using the Mantis
issue tracker, including attaching files and adding notes. If
you have a problem, ask on this list for help.
In short, I feel very much encouraged by recent progress, and I
hope you all do too!
Dave

Slightly odd behaviour #3225
by Brian
Double clicking on an HTML icon now only loads NetSurf. A further double
click is now needed to load the HTML file. Previously, a single double
click on the file icon was all that was needed to load the file into
NerSurf.

Segfault: issue 2381
by Dave Higton
If any of you has seen NetSurf quit (the log shows a segfault)
when you clicked in the window, I'd recommend that you get one
of today's builds. (Last time I looked, the latest was 3053.)
If you're interested, Mantis issue 2381 has more details.

Can't leave feedback on eBay
by Harriet Bazley
I've received an item from an eBay seller that I'm very pleased with, and
would like to leave feedback, but I can't find a way to do it any more. I
can find the original item page (I bought one of a batch), but there doesn't
seem to be a 'leave feedback' link on that. I can't find a list of things
I bought, let alone a list of things awaiting feedback - do I have to wait
until eBay eventually sends me a reminder with a direct link?
(And will even that work any more? If I use the 'View Order Details' link
on the e-mail I was sent to confirm dispatch, the resulting page is blank
save for the header.)

Not an important bug.
by Ron Briscoe
I have not reported this on the bug tracker as it does not affect the running
of NetSurf at all.
The download window in NetSurf is too narrow. That is when downloading a large
zip for instance only the last one or two digits of the downloaded amount are
shown. E.G. 123.45Mb of 36GB shows only the 45 digits.
As I say not a show stopper, but for the likes of me who enjoys seeing the
download progress figures moving, an irritant ;-).
Regards Ron.

BBC site gone mobile again
by Richard Porter
The BBC web site is delivering mobile-type layout again on NetSurf.
Earlier versions are doing the same thing so I guess the site has
changed. With javascript enabled the news section displays in vertical
format (everything down the left-hand side) but the home page causes
NS to loop or run extremely slowly (throbber stops rotating) - regex
problem again?

Flickr
by John Williams
Attempting to view a photo of the PiTop at:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/andymarks1970/22992712162/
does not render the photo, yet it has been pointed out to me that it does
work with NetSurf 3.1, and for me here with an old 3.0.
3.3 fails to render the image, as do later development versions, but I do
not have sufficient stock of older versions to isolate when the problem
started.
If anyone does have adequate numbers of earlier versions to find out at
what development version the trouble started, I'm sure that information
would help the developers greatly!

Google crash
by Geoffrey Baxendale
Hi,
I find that clicking in the search box on Google UK with JS
enabled crashes Netsurf CI 3055. It's OK with JS off.
(RISC OS 6.2 on Kinetic)
Has anyone else seen this or is it just me?
