RO full save and images in CSS
by Martin Bazley
I see from the progress page that this is a known issue, but I just want
to request its implementation.
The RISC OS full save, while saving all images referred to in HTML,
doesn't pay any attention to images referred to in CSS, enclosed in
url() brackets. They are neither downloaded nor renamed.
I don't know if the situation has changed significantly in recent times,
but images in CSS is now standard practice for pretty much every
website, and this has the effect that any given full save will look
extremely different from the same page viewed online.
For a good example, try full-saving http://www.beano.com/ .
(The full save code really needs rewriting anyway, to organise things in
a directory structure with original leafnames intact mimicking the
structure of an actual website, simultaneously making it more
user-friendly to browse and easier to transcode URLs for, but that won't
happen in the near future and this is a more important stop-gap.)

NetSurf RISC OS archive files
by John Williams
I have noticed recently that the NetSurf download for RISC OS varies
between zip (&a91) and archive (&ddc) between versions.
Formerly only the archive type was used. The change was first recorded here
around r10940.
I noticed this because I am in the habit¹ of pinning the latest development
version I have to my backdrop from within the archive.
If I restart my machine, the icon from within the RISC OS archive file
survives the reset and remains on the pinboard, whereas that from within a
zip archive does not.
I imagine that if I make my pinboard file run later I may be able to solve
this problem, though here SparkFS handles both filetypes, which is a bit
puzzling.
So, is the variation of archive type just an accident of convenience for
members of the team, and are any other users affected practically by this
inconsistency?

Slashdot
by Dave Higton
Slashdot redesigned their site (http://slashdot.org/) this week. I
notice that, at the top of the left hand ribbon, there are several
clickable items that are completely invisible (r11510, Iyonix, 512
MiB).
Can anyone see why, i.e. is the site wrong (they are soliciting
feedback from users, expecting that they will have created problems)
or is NS getting it wrong?

Mac OS X port and other frontend news
by Michael Drake
Mac OS X port
NetSurf has been ported to Mac OS X. There are a couple
of screenshots showing the new Mac OS X front end on the
NetSurf web site.
http://netsurf-browser.org/about/screenshots/fullsize/cocoa-netsurf.png
http://netsurf-browser.org/about/screenshots/fullsize/cocoa-wikipedia.png
The port was done by Sven Weidauer in just a couple of
weeks. Currently it has to be built from source,
following the instructions in 'Docs/BUILDING-Cocoa' in the
source tree.
Other front end news
NetSurf has also been ported recently to Atari systems by
Ole Loots, and some work has been done on the Windows
front end.
This brings the list of platforms for which NetSurf has
native front ends to:
+ AmigaOS 4
+ Atari OS
+ BeOS & Haiku
+ GTK (e.g. Linux, BSDs, ...)
+ Mac OS X
+ RISC OS
+ Windows
There is also the simple framebuffer front end, which is
not tied to any OS or toolkits.
The AmigaOS 4 port continues to be improved by Chris Young,
and it could be made to run on AmigaOS 3 with help from
someone with experience of the OS.
The RISC OS front end is in the process of being overhauled
to make it easier to work with by Steve Fryatt.
Availability of NetSurf binaries on the NetSurf web site
Currently we only have binaries available for RISC OS,
AmigaOS 4 and Haiku.
RISC OS is the best served with both releases and autobuilt
'test builds' available. Amiga OS is similar, but without
an automated mechanism for test builds. For Haiku there is
only an old binary release of NetSurf 2.0.
We plan to make NetSurf binaries available for more
platforms as time permits. These will either be full
releases, or they will be marked as technology previews,
according to the status of the port.

Crash on closing window while searching
by Martin Bazley
Procedure:
Open document.
Open search window.
Type something.
Close document.
Crash.
Only happens if search window is open and currently has at least one
item highlighted. Closing parent document while search window is blank
or showing 'Not found' does not crash. Neither does closing a different
document to that being searched.

CSS torture test
by Martin Bazley
Just thought I'd share this (pure HTML and CSS) URL for when the new CSS
parser is done:
http://www.shouldiworkforfree.com/
It'll be interesting to come back afterwards and see how much has been
fixed.

Wikipedia display oddity
by Dave Higton
Someone mentioned an oddity in the display of Wikipedia pages very
recently, at which point I looked rather more carefully at pages
from Wikipedia than I normally do. The left hand column seems to
be displayed narrower than it should be - the globe is truncated
on both sides, as is "The Free Encyclopedia" below it. I've only
checked up to r11289, which I downloaded this evening but I see
has already been superseded :-)
Not a big deal, of course; hardly worth a bug report, but enough
to be noted.
