[Netsurf-develop] Problem with www.savastore.com site
by Grahame
Hi,
The Watford Electronics site www.savastore.com works ok with Netsurf
except that each page has a massive blank area at the top so you have to
scroll down a long way to get to the info. Is this something that can be
rectified or is the site at fault?
Regards,
Grahame

[Netsurf-develop] file portability
by tony moore
One of the truly impressive features of NetSurf is full-save.
The file (application directory) saved is compact and preserves
most of the data which created the original page. However, when
moved to another platform, the format causes problems.
The full-save application directory is a useful container but,
when opened on a Windows machine, it presents a screenful of
untyped files. It may be easy enough to guess that 'index' is
the html file and, if it is renamed 'index.htm', then it can
indeed be opened in IE (or FireFox, etc). 'Open with IE' will
also display an untyped 'index' file.
IE is apparently not troubled that the image files are untyped
and displays them correctly, moreover if an image is saved from
the web page IE saves it with the correct file extension.
However, if a file is copied from the directory, not only does
it have an enigmatic name, but its filetype is unknown.
Much has been written elsewhere about the filenames, so I will
not pursue that topic here. However, to load an image file into
a viewer, it is necessary to open it first in a text editor, to
discover its type, and then to rename it .gif or whatever (or
save it from the web page, as above). Perhaps not too difficult
to perform for one web page or one image but, if there are many,
it can be tedious.
Does all this matter? Well http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html32 says
that
The HyperText Markup Language (HTML) is a simple markup
language used to create hypertext documents that are portable
from one platform to another.
and it seems to me that the fewer differences in file formats,
between RISC OS and other platforms, the easier life would be.
In this instance, I wish to suggest that each file should retain
its DOS extension, ie /gif etc, and, to make life simpler on
other platforms, the NetSurf full-save file format should be
!saved_page
index/htm
!Run
!Sprites
files_dir [containing the images and other files]
index/htm + files_dir would then be in the IE saved-web-page
format (making it unnecessary to hunt for the html file in a
screenful of images) but, of course, !saved_page would appear
to be unaltered to the RISC OS user.
May I also echo a previous request that NetSurf should save the
url of the page. IE (apologies for mentioning it again!) does
this by writing it in a comment in the header of the html file,
where it can be readily be found, if needed.

[Netsurf-develop] feature requests
by Jess Hampshire
Hi
Could an option to send a request to the w3 validator to validate the
current page be added? (On the page part of the menu in the main window)
Also could the link for the new version of flash be added to the
download page? You've obviously done a lot of work to make it function,
and I'm sure there are users who don't know about it.
Also, where there is a page of hideous code that won't display
correctly, would an option to send the source through html tidy before
rendering help?
thanks

[Netsurf-develop] A minor point
by Bryn Evans
I notice that in the Choices menu > browser > language selection
francaise is with a small F, whereas deutsch and english
have capital letters. Ignoring long established rivalries
shouldn't a little consistancy apply here?

[Netsurf-develop] netsurf running out of memory
by Daniel Ellis
I came across a web page which was causing Netsurf to claim that it was
running out of memory when it clearly wasn't. I narrowed it down to the
attached file, which is basically an <iframe> directive with empty src.
The strangest thing is that the error occuring depends upon the name of
the file you execute! Changing the name of the file caused the problem to
go away - probably something to do with the unexpected case of src being
NUL.

[Netsurf-develop] Paypal
by Jess Hampshire
Hi
I tried to pay with this using netsurf, but it got into a sort of loop
(went back to 2 pages previously) is this some problem with netsurf
(authentication??? - I have to enter my password twice on some sites,
and I have to enter it on every fetch on my router's config page)
or is it just dodgy coding on payapal itself?
Thanks

[Netsurf-develop] input focus
by tony moore
NetSurf (09 Feb 2005), RISC OS 4.39
Using recent builds of NetSurf, after loading a file page the
window title bar is coloured cream, suggesting that the window
has input focus. However, the key shortcuts are not available
and it is necessary to click in the window before they will work.

Oh no tread felt I assure you. :-)
I like the icons you supplied. But can we legally use them? They are
probably a registered trademark of a certain company? ;-)
