[Netsurf-develop] NetSurf Metal Theme
by Richard Spencer
I've uploaded a simple NetSurf theme (just a Spritefile) at
http://www.richardspencer.freeuk.com/ns_metal.zip
To install, drag the !NetSurf dir over the top of your application,
select Choices from the iconbar>Themes>Metal, quit and reload.
Based on MIT's Galeon project's Remembrance theme, with an original
throbber I'm getting to like :-)
Please let me know likes or dislikes. The whole thing is very beta and
will be adapted as Netsurf grows/changes.

[Netsurf-develop] GetNetSurf
by Dave
I use James Robinson's GetNetSurf to regularly update NS on my SARPC.
An Iyonix owning friend, who I've recently encouraged to try NetSurf, is
going to continue with NS, so I'd like to have GetNetSurf installed on his
Iyo to make update life easier for him.
Myself, being a user of RO Select (4.39) it gets a bit confusing trying to
fathom where to put things in RO 5.nn. (As it's based on an older version
of the OS).
On my machine "wget" and "unzip" are in ...!Boot.Library.User
So Guys, my question is this.
On an Iyonix with RO 5.nn should the two (above named)files still be
placed in ...!Boot.Library?
Cheers and thanks

[Netsurf-develop] Long loading time
by Paul Sprangers
Dear developers,
Although the latest build (27 Feb 2005 23:34) appears to be much more
stable than its predecessors during the last month, it still takes hours
(that is, about 25 seconds) to load, each time.
Is this only me?
Should I send any file?
What can I do?
Kind regards,
Paul Sprangers

[Netsurf-develop] NS 27th feb won't load now
by Dr Peter Killworth
After:
> Current NS (24th Feb) can't even access the test build page without
> disappearing, leaving
> an open and uninformative stderr (RO4.02, bog standard SA).
and the remarkably unhelpful
>Try re-scanning your fonts. Run !Boot then visit Fonts.Rescan fonts
(unhelpful in that it stopped the 24 Feb version from running at all,
crashing out with the now apparently standard error about the Unicode
font library not being able to load)
I then (using an older and clearly more reliable!) NetSurf, uploaded the
27 Feb version, but it gets the same error message.
PLEASE (that's supposed to sound heartfelt) can someone fix this please?
Thank heavens for old versions!

[Netsurf-develop] FP exceptions, font issues
by James Bursa
I've made a fix for the most common bug that was triggering FP exceptions.
Please let us know if you still see this issue, and which pages trigger it.
Thanks for your patience!
Loading should now be much faster on machines with many fonts. The price for
this is an increase in memory usage of about 100K. NetSurf now loads even when
some fonts fail to work (I didn't expect that so many users would have some
broken fonts installed).
Get the latest build from http://netsurf.sourceforge.net/builds/ as usual.

How about using the !Fonts1 thing? I've had it for years, and
little-used fonts lurk in appropriately named fonts directories, to be
called on when needed. I've had
MoreFonts.!ScriptFnt
MoreFonts.!SansSerif
MoreFonts.!Roman
MoreFonts.!Microsoft
MoreFonts.!Fonts1
MoreFonts.!Decorativ
for so long they've still got short names. Checking the BASIC file,
ExtraFont, inside the applications, it says:
REM > ExtraFont
REM Alistair Shimmin 04jun91
REM ©SJ Research 1991
REM Version 0.02
So as far as copyright goes I've no idea. Alistair has been Alice for
more than a decade, and SJ have gone the way of all flesh. My memory
tells me it was covered by a "sure, pass it around" licence, but I've
not got that in writing.
Original purpose was to stop Nexus getting trashed by massive loads of
fonts at startup, which is where we came in, really.
Cheers
Mike

<shameless plug>
It sounds like you could do with a copy of FontDir Pro then. ;-)

[Netsurf-develop] Latest build - error message
by Roger Crabb dipLA
Hi
Don't know whether I'm doing this right but here goes . . .
Just downloaded the latest build (27 Feb I think), and when trying to
run it I get the following error message from Netsurf:
The Unicode font library could not be
initialized. Please report this to the
developers.
I hope I have done that successfully.
200Mhz RPC
RISC OS 4.02
Unipod
Thanks for all your efforts on a wonderful browser.
(javascript would be nice ;)

[Netsurf-develop] unicode font manager et al
by Dr Peter Killworth
After some digging and locating rufl_test, I discovered that RiScript
(a commercial program) had produced its own version of Times without a
metric. Removing that and rebooting fixed the problem.
But the point is, surely it would be possible to do some limited checking
on folk's fonts (and why does NS care about most of them anyway?) to at
least respond gently with "font xxx isn't kosher, ignoring it" rather than
just crashing without warning? It would be better than assuming all users
are sufficiently savvy to run a font checking program just in order to use
a browser!
