[Netsurf-develop] Drobe/Scale Crash
by Jan-Jaap van der Geer
Hi,
Test Build (01 Dec 2004 22:00)
NetSurf on <riscos>, node <iyonix>, release <5.08>, version <1.0>,
machine <arm-acorn>
I find that if I go to drobe, change the scale to 140% (haven't
checked if this value triggers it but a short test seemed to
indicate that scaling has something to do with it), and then
select-click on the first article (Midlands 2004 show report).
Within that article (I wait until it is fully loaded, in case that
matters) I adjust-click on one of the links (within the text) that
point to other drobe-articles. Very often as soon as this second
article is fully loaded, NetSurf disappears from the iconbar.
It seems quite repeatable to me, although it doesn't seem to
happen always. If someone wants a backtrace, let me know.
While talking about scaling... In the scaling-dialogue, I'd like
<Return> to have the same effect as clicking on 'Scale'. :-)
Oh, while on the subject of keyboard shortcuts, is there a way to
get the focus in the URL bar without putting 'www.' in there so
that I can change the existing URL?
Cheers,
Jan-Jaap

[Netsurf-develop] Display->Images->Animations not stopping animations
by Andy Wingate
Does unticking Display->Images->Animations stop animations as it seems
to still allow annoying GIF animations to carry on here.
For a moment I wondered if it was was to do with having 'Buffer
animations' set but unticking that too did not help. So I reenabled
that to go back to unflickery textareas.
I have animate_images:0 in NetSurf's choices. Would minimum_gif_delay
help hide the animations?
I notice Display->Images->Foreground Images is greyed out. Is it
likely to be made toggleable in the future?

[Netsurf-develop] segmentation fault
by Jeremy C B Nicoll
On http://www.neomagic.com I went to neomagic's about page, then their
employment page, then clicked on the "engineering" link for santa
clara, just for the hell of it.
NS crashed; I've got the stderr which is 754K or so long, ending with
stack backtrace etc. Do you want me to send all, or just some of that
to someone?
This was NS 29 NOV 2004 22:00, on RO 3.70/3, on a 258M RAM machine.

[Netsurf-develop] HTML errors
by Gavin Wraith
I found that clicking on some of the links in
the webpage at
http://stommel.tamu.edu/~baum/literary.html
could cause Oregano2 (on RO 5.08) either
to crash or to produce the message
"Oregano2 already running", whereas Netsurf
seemed to cope with it OK. Examination of
the page cited and the page targeted from it
shows that there is text (of the form
"[<A href = .... > .... </A>]" )
between the </HEAD> and <BODY> tags.
I do not know what the official docs say about
how browsers should cope with stuff that should
not be there, but how in fact has Netsurf been
programmed to cope with such material? I have
in mind text that is not a DOCTYPE statement
occurring before <HTML>, illegal text within
<HEAD>..</HEAD>, illegal text within </HEAD>..<BODY>,
illegal text within </BODY>..</HTML> and
text after </HTML>.

[Netsurf-develop] Netsurf through an authenticating cache
by Keith Hopper
Hi,
Has anyone a guesstimate for when I may be able to use Netsurf
sensibly from home through a cache which requires authentication? Every
time I make a request for a document or to download a file the first
attempt brings a 'not allowed' response. Merely clicking on the reload
button brings the document/file requested (without images, of course since
the response to image requests presumably comes back with an error too)!
While many images are not very important at all - just occasionally they
are - eg an image map.
The other oddity is that - presumably the last error message for an
image - seems to be only 75% received (938 out of 1.38kbytes!).
May I too add my ha'porth to the plea not to munge file leaf-names at
all for downloaded files? Every single file I download has to have the
original file name re-typed for saving - only a minor problem, but worth
mentioning I believe.
Keep up the good work!

[Netsurf-develop] Invisible pound signs
by Jess Hampshire
Hi
I just tried a posting on Drobe and when I typed a pound sign nothing
appeared, so I tried it again (being a new keyboard) nothing. I gave up
and typed "pounds".
When I looked at the posting the pound signs were there.
I tried typing in the (netsurf) google box and the sign appears, trying
on drobe comment boxes, with the latest download, it still doesn't
work.
Cheers

Hi all
http://validator.w3.org
is a link to the World Wide Web Consortium's validator. Fill in a URL,
and see how many errors it generates. <sarcasm>As the W3C are generally
accepted to have some small expertise in how to produce standards compliant
web pages</sarcasm>, you've got significant ammunition to throw at whichever
company's site is broken, and 'well it works OK on Internet Explorer'
cuts no ice whatsoever against 'according to the global web standards body,
your site is invalid.'
Incidentially, AUS-CERT has advised that for security reasons users /should
not use internet Explorer at all!/
URL: http://www.auscert.org.au/3680 (see item 3)
If you have problems with a site, try validating it. If it doesn't validate,
complain. Escalate the matter as high as possible - preferably above the
level of the stupid pseudo-techies for whom 'it works OK on IE' is an
adequate defence for incompetent web page coding.
It doesn't matter what browser you're using - if the page doesn't validate,
it's not guaranteed to work properly on /any/ browser and /therefore it damn
well should be fixed/.

[Netsurf-develop] CSS resources available
by Chris Terran
Now that RISC OS has some browsers which support CSS (Cascading
Style Sheets) -- Netsurf very well, Oregano2 rather less so --
it seems time to provide some support for it.
As a start, I've put together a StrongHelp manual for CSS Level 1.
You can find it at:
http://www.roast.iconbar.com/css/
...along with a couple of other goodies. There are some filetype
sprites for CSS files, a StrongED editing mode for same, and a CSS
demonstration page. I suggest you look at the latter in Netsurf
first ... then try O2 ;-(
The manual isn't just a reference -- it also includes a quick-start
course in CSS1, explanations of the concepts behind it, how to use
CSS in your web pages, and a brief overview of RISC OS browser
support.
All feedback welcome ... I'm sure it can be improved!
Best, Chris

[Netsurf-develop] NetSurf hanging on startup
by Adam
Hi All,
I've been putting my toe in this area every so often and have been using
Netsurf on my standalone RiscPC. However, for the last few weeks so so,
none of the test builds have worked :-(
NetSurf loads onto the iconbar OK, but as soon as it tries to render a
page (even its own start page) it just gets stuck with the hourglass
running and "Processing document" in the info bar. Only Alt-Break gets
me out of it.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a solution?
Thanks,
Adam
