[Netsurf-develop] looping after fetching a page?
by Jeremy C B Nicoll
With the 29NOV build, and also with the 13DEC one, when I go to
https://s-s-l.co.uk/aal/ the page displays ok, then before I've
supplied a userid & password to login to the A&A site, there's the
slightest pause, the hourglass comes on, and some disk activity starts
- perhaps just stderr being written to.
I don't know if the activity ever stops; the longest I've waited is
about 30 seconds. If you can't reproduce this I can email stderrs from
the 29NOV build or the DEC13 one to someone.

[Netsurf-develop] suggestion about enhancing "full save"
by Jeremy C B Nicoll
I think the full-save option is great, except for one thing. The names
of the image files that get saved are just gibberish (I presume based
on timestamps or something). I do understand why this is done.
If you make two separate visits to a page and do full-saves on each
occasion the resulting directories of files may be basically the same,
but they won't look like it if compared, eg by !DirSync. Even the HTML
files will differ because the embedded file URLs will contain different
filenames.
I do full-saves in three quite different situations. For one of these,
the way that full-save works is immaterial - I merely want to be able
to double click on the saved pseudo-app and see the page as it was.
In another situation, I want to compare what was on the page with what
was previously there, to see exactly what has changed. That's hard at
present.
The other situation is when I want to keep just part of what was on a
page; then I tend to hand-edit the HTML file and delete the stuff I
don't want to keep. It's tricky relating the names of embedded files
to the original HTML for the page. For example, a 'view source' might
show the original page had images named example1, example2, example3
and result1, result2, result3 - but in the full-saved version the names
will be completely different from that.
I'd like to suggest two extra facilities:
a) that when a full-save is done, a separate text file is generated
containing an entry for each of the extra saved files. I'd like
to see the original HTML's URL for each image and the URL used
for the full save version. At least that would give some clear
relationship between - say - "example1.jpg" and "65f6f8a8".
In the past I've manually created such lists (by saving the 'view
source' page as well as the HTML page in the full-save, doing a
ListOfFound in StrongED for the img= refs in each one, saving the
LoFs and merging them).
I've then edited those cross-reference lists to create an obey
file which issues rename commands against the saved directory
so that eg file "65f6f8a8" becomes "example1" again. Of course
that has still left the HTML file itself needing edited to match,
but it has helped.
b) an option that saves the images with less obscure names, but
definitely names that will be the same if two consecutive
saves of the same page (on two visits) are made. I'd suggest
simply that they are numbered from 1 upwards in the order that
they are defined on the HTML page.
While this would still hide the fact that the images were
originally known as example1 etc, it would at least make
comparisons easier.
I'm sure someone will suggest that files should simply be saved with
their original leafnames, ie that "example1.jpg" is saved with name
"example1". I dare say this is not so easy because:
a) the original page might contain references to
img=somepath/image3.jpg and img=anotherpath/image3.jpg
Clearly both images can't be saved as "image3".
b) the original page might contain references to
img=thirdpath/image4.jpg and img=thirdpath/image4.png
Clearly both images can't be saved as "image4".
c) the image filenames on the original page may be very long
or contain characters that don't work well in RO filenames.
Personally I'd prefer the names of saved images to be short
enough and simple enough to work on old-format RO disks.

Thanks for that info. I do have a copy of Zap, but I normally use
StrongED, and so did not realise that that solution was available
on my hard drive. Resolved: to look more closely at Zap!

Seconded!

[Netsurf-develop] NCNetSurf

Is it just me or does the latest build not run? "A windows template is
missing from the Templates file. Please reinstall NetSurf" is the error I
get.

[Netsurf-develop] SSL certificates
by Dr Peter Killworth
Is there any chance of getting certificates working? To access my work
email (this address) from home needs a webmail system (webmail.soc.soton.ac.uk)
which Netsurf balks at.

[Netsurf-develop] Additional use for 'find text' icon
by Joe Taylor
Might I suggest that it would be very useful if the 'Adjust' action
(i.e. selecting an icon with the right-hand mouse button) for the 'Find
text' icon on the Netsurf toolbar were used to result in opening a
webpage for a search engine.
My preferred page would be www.google.co.uk but others might like to
have a different choice. Incidentally my implementation of Netsurf
-(Test build 12th December 22.15 - leaves off the 'h' from the phrase
"Advanced search" at www.google.co.uk
Cheers

[Netsurf-develop] Hotlist
by Richard Wilson
Just a quick note to say I've just checked in the new hotlist code
(although it is still incomplete in a places) so it's probably advisable to
backup your hotlist if it's valuable to you
(!Boot.Choices.WWW.NetSurf.Hotlist).
Also, whoever it was who was asking about stopping animations a few days
ago (I forget who - sorry) then this should also now be working although the
option is not in the GUI at the moment, just in the choices file.

[Netsurf-develop] yahoo! mail
by tony moore
Normally I use Yahoo! mail on a windows machine, running MS IE,
at a nearby internet cafe which has a broadband connection, but
I have recently been exploring the possibility of using Yahoo
mail on my rpc running NetSurf, on a dial-up connection at home.
NetSurf cannot display the latest version of Yahoo mail but
Yahoo does allows you to 'switch back' to a 'version supported by
your current browser'. This is less sophisticated, but would be
adequate if all its functions worked with NetSurf.
Incoming mail can be read, and incoming attachments can be
downloaded, but sending mail presents some difficulties:
It is possible to type into the compose screen but, apart from
delete to left, the editing facilities do not work (eg it is not
possible to select a word and delete it). Anyway, I would rather
prepare the text in StronyED and then cut and paste it into Yahoo
but unfortunately, that too does not work since both Ctrl-V and
dropping a text-file onto the compose screen are ignored. Can
this problem be solved in NetSurf? If not, can anyone please
suggest a way of spooling text, from a file to the cursor?
Further, the button which should lead to the outgoing attachments
screen is inactive, and hovering the pointer over it shows, in
the status bar, 'Warning: form can not be submitted'. Will this
eventually work in NetSurf, or is there a way around it now?
Tony
