All of us on the NS users ML were reminded recently that there is no
maintainer of the RISC OS port of NS.
I have looked a couple of times at the docs for building the various
ports of NS, but, unless I've missed something, there don't seem to
be any instructions for building for RISC OS.
I understand that it's a cross compilation on a Linux machine (or a
very long wait for every build!). I really have very little idea
what I have to install on my Ubuntu box to build NS, nor what to do
when I have the build tools.
So, have I missed something?
If not, I would suggest that putting the relevant docs up is a vital
step towards getting a RISC OS maintainer.

Ah, thanks. Now I understand why I couldn't find it - the information
is in a completely different place from that for the other platforms,
and not linked in any meaningful way from the NS website front page.
Anyway...
I have two Linux machines in the house, both of which run Ubuntu 14.04
32 bit. I don't believe either of them is 64 bit capable. Oh well...
Given a Linux host, is it necessary or desirable to create a separate
VM for NS development?

Correction - the one I'd prefer to use is 64 bit capable. However,
the Ubuntu VM manager requires a 64 bit host OS, so I would have to
reinstall Ubuntu anyway. This is not unduly difficult to do as I
have very few personal data on the machine, so there wouldn't be a
lot to do to be fully up and running as before.
Maybe I can dual boot 32 bit and 64 bit Ubuntu, which would appear
to be an alternative solution?

Well, so far as building things is concerned, that wiki page contains
the exact same information as is in the QUICK-START guide in the source
tree. What it does do is add some background around installing the cross
compiler binaries for those who don't want to build it from source.

You can always build the RISC OS toolchain from source for your system
-- we only provide binaries for amd64 as that happens to be what all the
CI buildslaves use. The toolchain binaries are a side effect of the CI
and are not meant as a fully supported deliverable of the project.
To build the toolchain:
git clone git://git.netsurf-browser.org/toolchains.git
Then follow the instructions in the README. Note that the toolchain
build will take a number of hours to complete and is particularly
fragile, so you will have to start from scratch in the event that
something goes wrong.

It all went well until some way into the build itself:
riscos/bitmap.c:33:18: fatal error: rufl.h: No such file or directory
Indeed find can't find rufl.* in the workspace folder.
I didn't see any message flash past earlier about any missing files -
but that's no surprise, there's lots of text, only a small window,
and slow eyes watching.
Any suggestions?
Btw. it turned out that the cheap Linux notebook, which I had dismissed
as not being good enough to support 64 bits, actually has 64 bit
Ubuntu 14.04 on it. So it's been easier than I thought - in some
respects, anyway.

There are just a couple of discrepancies when using Ubuntu:
1) root doesn't really exist;
2) "sudo source env.sh", which I had expected to use as the nearest
equivalent, didn't understand source as a command. However,
"source env.sh" /was/ understood - albeit that's of course executed
as ordinary user, not what the docs say to do.
Does this mean I've missed something else?

You can usually[1] get a root shell on systems that use sudo by issuing
"sudo -s". Once there, you can source env.sh in the usual way.
"source" is a shell built-in, so doesn't exist as a binary on the path,
and thus won't work with sudo, as you've discovered.

This means you didn't set TARGET_ABI before sourcing env.sh, so it only
fetched the libraries needed for building for amd64. You need to do:
TARGET_ABI=arm-unknown-riscos source env.sh
ns-pull-install
Then build NetSurf again with "make TARGET=riscos".

I know I set TARGET_ABI twice - I remember thinking that it was curious
to have to issue the same command twice.
There is an error at the ns-pull-install stage:
make: *** /home/david/dev-netsurf/workspace/librufl: No such file or
directory. Stop.
Aha. Manually creating the librufl folder has moved it on one:
make: *** No rule to make target 'install'. Stop.
And "make TARGET=riscos" still stops, complaining it can't find
rufl.h.
There are earlier complaints relating to PKG_CONFIG_PATH and no
package 'check'.
Perhaps I need to go back to the start. "source env.sh" was not
executed as root - could that be the cause?
