This is an extension to the previous patch series, which gets rid of the
context manager for creating a whole system branch and replaces it with
one for the subdirectory.
The caller is expected to initialize the system branch themselves.
I'm not happy with the API in this variant either. I'm going to -1
this, on the grounds that the API in the version I already +1'd is
good enough, and not significantly worse than this API, and I think we
can look at this later and come up with something much better.
